アメリカ育ちの親日家
最も子どもたちと深く関わる、教育の核となるポジション。みんなで磨き上げたカリキュラムを、現場でどのように表現するかはメインティーチャー次第。子どもたち一人ひとりの心の動きを感じ取り、友人や兄弟、家族のような存在として寄り添います。表立って「教える」のではなく、子どもの心にそっと寄り添いながら、最適なタイミングで導く。教育の本質を最前線で体現する、かけがえのない存在です。
アメリカのアラバマ州やメリーランド州で育つ。父はアメリカ空軍勤務、母は教師。
父が青森県の三沢基地に所属していたことをきっかけに、日本の文化に興味を持つように。
日本の歴史や伝統文化はもちろん、アニメをはじめとするポップカルチャー
（特に『ドラゴンボール』！）が大好き。日本語の勉強をコツコツ続け、自他ともに認める努力家。
父が1980年代後半に三沢基地に所属していた影響で、日本のファッション（特に学生服）に興味を持ち、家で日本の文化についてよく話を聞いて育ちました。高校の頃から日本のアニメを字幕で見るようになり、日本や日本語も身近に感じていました。
日本に来ようと思った理由はたくさんありますが、最も大きなきっかけは、YouTubeで見たアメリカ人女性の動画でした。彼女は私と似た背景を持ち、日本語を学びながら子ども達に日本語を教えていました。その姿に強く心を動かされ「自分もこうなりたい」と思ったのです。
母が教師だったこともあり、子どもを教える喜びが自分の中にも自然に受け継がれているのかもしれません。あるとき子どもと外を歩いていた際に救急車が通ったので「AMBULANCE」と教えたところ、次にまた救急車が通ったとき、その子が「AMBULANCE！」と口にしたんです。「それ、僕が教えた言葉だね！」と、そんな小さな出来事が本当に嬉しく感じました。
アメリカで高校生を教えていたこともありますが、小さな子ども達はより活発で、毎日新しいことを教える喜びがあります。このキャリアを邁進していこうと思っています。まだまだ日本語は完ぺきではありませんが、Wingsには日本語レッスンのサポート制度があるので、時間を見つけて学び続けていきたいです。Wingsは雰囲気がとても良く、みんなフレンドリー、子ども達のことも大好きです。普段は「週休3日制」を利用して、日本の魅力をあっちこっち探っています。そのうち、長めの休みを取って北海道や沖縄にも行ってみたいですね。
Influenced by my father’s service at Misawa Air Base in the late 1980s, I became interested in Japanese fashion (especially school uniforms) and grew up hearing a lot about Japanese culture at home. Around high school, I started watching Japanese anime with subtitles and felt familiar with Japan and the Japanese language as well.
There are many reasons why I decided to come to Japan, but the biggest catalyst was a video I saw on YouTube of an American woman. She had a similar background to me and was learning Japanese and teaching it to children. I was strongly moved by her and thought, “I want to be like her.
My mother was a teacher, and perhaps the joy of teaching children was naturally passed on to me. One day, I was walking outside with a child, and when an ambulance passed by, I taught him the word “AMBULANCE,” and the next time another ambulance passed by, he said, “AMBULANCE! That’s the word I taught him! I was really happy to hear such a small incident.
I had taught high school students in the U.S., but small children are more active, and I have the pleasure of teaching them something new every day. I am determined to push forward in this career. My Japanese is not perfect yet, but Wings has a support system for Japanese lessons, so I hope to find time to continue learning. I usually take advantage of my “three-day weekends” to explore the charms of Japan here and there. Eventually, I would like to take a longer vacation and visit Hokkaido or Okinawa.
